Family Walk along the Wall (Gilsland to Willowford Farm)

This is a walk we did recently. It goes from Gilsland to Willowford Farm. I hadn't done this bit of the Wall before and it was a joy to do.

We have so much to do at the moment that it is good to get out and feel the tension melt away.

We have to get and sort out plans for an extension to our B&B, get it before the planners, get it built. We have to do up a house in a town close by and get it rented out p.d.q. (various things have not allowed us to do this for nine months). We have a website to build for the B&B, we have a website to re-do for the Red Sea Scuba Diving Business which we part-own and manage from here. We have to keep an eye on the gardens (both houses), not let either deteriorate too much in all this rain! We need to go on courses to keep our B&B skills uptodate and I'm almost finished with wrestling with the accounts for it. (Yippee!) (I'm also thinking of teaching Latin to children and beginner's level for adults. Maybe combining that with the history of Hadrian's Wall?) There are Dive Shows to go to, letters, meetings, housework, committee meetings for various things in the village and normal life to attend to. I'm not complaining, I'm sure everyone is just as busy, but these walks help take the strain away.

Oh the joys of muddy wellies and splashing in big puddles!

Ed, the dog, enjoys the walk too. Back in 1998 The Diver was bringing all the staff in from the Staff house in Hurghada, Red Sea, when one of them spotted a small red/brown puppy running after the pickup! And so..."ED" became part of the Easy Divers family....and ours. Lucky us.

Pity Hadrian didn't build a bigger, stronger wall to keep the Scots out. Then we wouldn't have Alex Ferguson, The Krankies or Gordon Brown down here... You sound busy. B&B training? What's that? How to fry an egg... how to make a bed... how to welcome strangers? I could be the course leader!

Ay well, the dreaded "elf & safety course", how not to poison your guests with "food handling safety" and how not to burn 'em down neither! We Reivers folk need to be told how to treat 'em gently, how to cook 'em bankers (ahem!) bangers proper and how not to steal that them cattle nor sheep. (!?)(I could never do accents properly I think I've strayed into the Wild West YP!! Can't say anything against the Scots I'm afraid I used to work for RBS...which I think is still standing as I write...) Yes, I'm sure you could be the course leader, absolutely!

And I have to say that the good old Royal Bank of Scotland was one of my best employers...

You are lucky to be able to walk along that wall any time you want!

Completely agree Maggie. I should do it more often...my five year old daughter calmly asked me yesterday morning "When are you going to get rid of that bump that No.2 came out of?" (That 32 months old bump!!!)

Hallo Hadriana, I came over to your blog from Denise. What you say about taking a walk and the tension melts away is something that I know from my own experience. A friend of mine and me take an extended walk once a week in the neighbourhood and we feel reborn when we return!
The Hadrians Wall is beautiful! I never saw it before, only heard about it!
Have a nice weekend!

I would say you are very fortunate to live nearby and walk along Hadrian's Wall. Absolutely beautiful photos of the countryside, even the ones in the rain.

Hello to Maria, Thanks for popping by. It is something I should much more often. I'm trying to walk to school to pick my daughter every day in the afternoons. There is the route 72 cycle track which goes past Thirlwall Castle (which is the walk to the village school). I've mentioned it before but will write a proper post about it soon. It is a wonderful walk with fantastic views and I always feel better afterwards!

Hi Gill, thanks for the link - much appreciated. We ran the B&B last year and then we moved into it and there's no space for the guests! We are hoping to extend it (touch wood) and be back in business next Summer. We are lucky that we are on Hadrian's Wall Walk and the Pennine Way Walk. So there's plenty of business to be had. It can be hard work but it's nice meeting all the tourists who stay here.

Funny you should say that, Barbara, when it is raining - it can seem a bit miserable inside but once out in it...everything is a lot better! Thanks for passing by - I'll be over to your site soon.

That sort of landscape is perfect for putting life back into perspective. If I don't see 'green' once in a while I feel quite dead.

Good luck with all your projects :)

Thank you Suburbia! Got the surveyors have just been...so fingers crossed...:)

What I meant to say, Suburbia, is that surveyors have been and gone. So far thumbs up...will keep you all informed!
